3 Types of Lighting
In a home or business you can usually find different types of lighting depending on what the owner is trying to accomplish. Below are some explanations and examples of each.
Also known as general purpose lighting, it is exactly that. Used to illuminate the entire space or majority of a room, ambient lighting usually comes in the form of ceiling mounted fixtures, recessed lighting, or wall sconces placed around a room.
Used to light specific areas of a home or business. Task lighting comes in the form of under cabinet lights, island lights, and office lamps to focus on particular areas for tasks such as, preparing foods, reading, and working for example.
Accent lighting is used to draw attention to a particular item in a room. Art work, photographs, statues, or a item for sale. Recessed lighting, track lighting, spotlights are all used for accent lighting.
Whatever lighting you choose for your home or business, usually I recommend try to focus on ambient lighting first and then task lighting and accent lighting, although this is not always the case. It is best to get the opinion of a professional lighting designer or a licensed electrician to ensure you are completely satisfied with your lighting installation.
